Should I read my comics or keep them sealed?
What reading does
Each time you open a comic, the spine stresses and the cover can pick up creases, dust, or fingerprints. Those small marks can lower the grade, and the grade is a major part of value. Even careful readers can cause a spine ring or a corner crease over time.
Reading also exposes the comic to light, moisture, and food or drink. If you want to preserve the copy, it helps to keep it in a bag and board and avoid reading it in the same spot as food.
- Store key issues in bags and boards
- Read a second copy if you want to enjoy it
- Wash hands before handling valuable comics
Balancing enjoyment and value
You do not need to keep everything sealed. Many collectors read the common issues and keep only the rare or important ones protected. Decide early which comics are for reading and which are for collecting.
If you buy a comic specifically to read, buy a reader copy in lower condition, which costs less and does not need the same care.
Some collectors read a copy first and then decide whether it is worth keeping in a bag. Taking notes on each issue's condition before reading can also help you track changes over time.
Common mistakes
- Reading a rare key issue and expecting it to keep its high grade.
- Storing comics in a warm or damp spot after reading them.
