How should I store my comic book collection?
Ideal Environment
Comics are paper, so they react to heat, moisture, and light. The ideal storage spot is a climate-controlled room with stable temperature (around 65–70°F) and low humidity (45–55%).
Avoid basements (damp), attics (hot), and garages (temperature swings). These cause foxing (brown spots), warping, and brittleness.
Keep comics out of direct sunlight; UV rays fade colors and weaken paper. If you display comics, use UV-filtering glass or rotate them regularly.
- Temperature: 65–70°F (18–21°C)
- Humidity: 45–55%
- Dark, cool, dry room
- Avoid basements, attics, garages
Bags and Boards
Always bag and board your comics. Use acid-free, archival-quality bags (Mylar or polyethylene) and acid-free backing boards.
Mylar (Melinex) is the gold standard for long-term storage but costs more. Polyethylene is cheaper and fine for short-term, but replace every few years.
Insert the comic with the board behind it, then place in the bag with the flap on the back. Store upright, not stacked flat, to avoid spine damage.
- Mylar bags: best for valuable comics
- Polyethylene bags: budget option, replace periodically
- Acid-free boards: prevent bending and off-gassing
- Store upright in boxes
Boxes and Shelving
Use comic-specific storage boxes (short or long) made of acid-free cardboard. Short boxes are easier to handle and less likely to cause spine roll.
Don't overpack boxes; leave a little breathing room. Stack boxes no more than two high to avoid crushing.
For high-value comics, consider professional grading and encapsulation (e.g., CGC or CBCS), which provides a hard plastic case and a grade label.
- Short boxes: easier to manage
- Long boxes: hold more but heavier
- Don't stack more than two high
- Consider professional grading for keys
Common mistakes
- Storing comics in hot, humid places like attics or basements, which accelerates deterioration.
- Using cheap, acidic bags and boards that can damage comics over time.
- Stacking comics flat, which puts pressure on spines and can cause spine roll.
